A business carries out different types of research in order develops a better understanding of the fundamental concepts within specific fields to reach a specific commercial goal. Research can be of various types. One of the most commonly and widely used research is organization and management research (Neuman, 2016). Organization and management research refers to the systematic inquiry, which assists a company in solving the problems arising in its business and contributes towards management knowledge. This form of research is mostly applied in nature. Organization and management research helps a business in several ways, which has led to the increase in this type of research in different parts of the world. With an increase in complexity of business and increase in globalization, businesses are growing up in different parts across the globe, thereby increasing the arousal of issues in business.There are four different factors, which combine to make organization and management a distinct centre of focus for research (Sekaranand Bougie, 2016). The transdisciplinary approach is the first major factor while the second factors are that the access to information is difficult, as managers look into information one of the completiveadvantages of an organization in the market.

This is because management research acts as an aid in the business plans that help in forecasting and projecting the future of business through basing on the things that might have occurred during the earlier times. In case if organization and management research is carried out effectively, it can assist an organization in making effective plans on how it can become more viable within the field in which the organization operates. It helps a business in bringing about efficiency through the effective solutions it provides to solve different types of business problems.
In addition to the above points, there are various other points as well, which signify the importance of organization and management research. One of the most important factors is that organization and management research helps a business in testing its new products (Ketokiviand Choi, 2014). Organization and management researchhelps a business to test its possibilities regarding the success of its newly launched products or the products it is planning to launch shortly. Research helps a business in realizing what types of goods and services consumers want to purchase before launching new products in the market. However, it has been found from different research that organization and management research is more applied in nature than pure. The concept of pure research and applied nature is different from one another. Pure research, also referred to as the basic or fundamental research, refers to the scientific research conducted in a business to improve the scientific theories so that the prediction or understanding of any natural or any other type of another phenomenon can be developed (Bryman, 2015). Pure research does not usually produce any marketable results. However, it might be used to conduct later research into more profitable applications. On the other hand, applied research refers to the investigation and scrutiny of the findings derived from pure research to derive if the findings can be used for the development of any new any technology or product or not (Robsonand McCartan, 2016). This type of research mostly involves scientific study and derivation of solutions to seek solutions to practical problems.
The concept of applied and pure research has great disparities among both of them. This is because pure research is mostly exploratory by nature. It is used for exploring something for acquiring knowledge. However, applied research is not exploratory by its nature. It is mostly descriptive. The applied research moves on to the application of the information that has already been derived from pure research. The two types of research can also be differentiated from one another, as pure research is theoretical whereas applied research is practical, where the information derived from pure research is applied practically. However, both applied and pure research is important for business (Thorne, 2016). This is because pure research adds knowledge to business while applied research finds out solutions for the problems at hand using the knowledge acquired from pure research.
Thus, from this discussion, it can be evaluated that both pure and applied research has equal importance regarding organization and management research (Coghlanand Brannick, 2014). This is because organization and management research helps a business in applying existent knowledge into practical form, proving that it is a pure form of research. However, if the knowledge acquired from pure research did not exist to the business, it would not be possible to apply the theoretical knowledge into the practical form in case of organization and management research in business. The problems arising in business could not have been solved with organization and management research if there was no existence of scientific knowledge, which was possible to derive from pure research (Bryman, 2015). However, in the current times, researchers have been found to be discussing the topic that organization and management research is more applied in nature than pure. The debates that are currently taking place are throwing light on the application of applied research regarding organization and management researchmore than the application of pure research.
The debates of organization and management research currently taking place indicate thatorganization and management research refers to the practical application of the theories and concepts that have been developed from pure research (Fellowsand Liu, 2015). The organizations that are operating in different parts of the globe in the present scenario indicate that organizations are keener towards appointing and recruiting efficient and experienced managers for ensuring the effective management of the organizations. These managers are usually highly educated and have highly professional skills. Each manager has his or her knowledge from whatever he or she has studied during his or her academic career along with the knowledge each one of them has acquired from their past experiences of working in various types of organizations(Fellows and Liu, 2015). The knowledge acquired by them from their academic career or their experiencesis mostly pure. This is because pure research involves the research conducted to acquire theoretical knowledge about something. The knowledge acquired from pureresearch is in turn applied into practical form for organization and management research in an organization and is called applied research.
However, different researchers provide different opinion on the statement that organization and management research is more applied in nature than it is pure. This is because there arises a conflict in the views of each researcher regarding the type of research under which organization and management research can be categorized. In the context of organization and management research and the type of research under whichorganization and management research can be categorised, Schadet al. (2016) stated that organisation and management research is both pure as well as applied. According to the views expressed in this debate, an organisation and management research can be conducted with looking back to the theories and concepts developed earlier to look and move forward. Since applied research cannot be practicably done without the existence of the theoretical knowledge and experience gathered by an individual or an organization, organization and management research is both pure and applied in nature, and the debate shows that there remains an ecology maintained between pure and applied research within the field of organization and management research.
However, Bryman and Buchanan (2018) opined that organisation and management research is more applied in nature than pure because pure research alone will not be useful enough to satisfy the needs or requirements for which the organisation and management research is conducted in a business. The discussions or debates on this particular topic also show that organisation and management researchis primarily conducted in business to solve the specific issues and problems arising in the business. However, pure research will never be enough to solve the problems that occur in a business in a practical scenario. The immediate practical implications that can help a business in solving its problems can be derived only through applied research. Kenworthy and Verbeke (2015) also stated similar views on organisation and management research as it mentioned that the findings of applied research has practical relevance and generates value to managers in a business, which pure research fails to generate. Pure research is significant and can generate value to the society in general but cannot generate value to a business or its managers for solving the problems arising in the business, which yet again indicates that organisation and management research is more applied in nature than pure.
However, in the current debates on organisation and management research, researchers have also come up with the opinion that organisation and management research, in addition to being more applied than pure, needs to be made more imaginative and exciting. According to Rynesand Bartunek(2015), the first and foremost criteria on which individual judges anything that they encounter even before they decide on whether it is true or false is the criteria whether the encounter is exciting or not. Due to this reason, it is important for organisation and management research to be interesting. To earn the interest of a researcher, it is important that research is interesting. However, Eisenhardtet al. (2016) argued to the statement that research requiresbeing interestingby opening that being interesting is not everything that matters to be good for research. It is essential that the research question is good and the validity of the conclusions of the research is real.
On the other hand, Robinson (2015) argued on the topic that organisation and management research should be interesting since being interesting matters. According to this debate, in case if the organisation and management research is made interesting, it would help the managers of business in addressing the problems interestingly arising in the business without following the same old techniques of solving problems. The more interesting the organisation and management research, the more interesting is the solution to the problems arising within the workplace for which the research has been conducted. However, the current theories, practice and education have also come up with the idea of being imaginative in the field of organisation and management research (Johnsonand Duberley, 2015). To solve the problems arising in business with the application of organisation and management research, it is important to be imaginative. Imagination is the key to the success of creativityas well as innovation.
In the present times, imagination has emerged as one of the most common ingredients that are leading different businesses towards sustainable success through innovation of new products and services, innovating new business development ideas, etc. According to Cornelissen (2017), organisation and management research should be imaginative in order to bring about effectiveness among the managers of a business along with increasing the efficiency of the overall business performance. This is because organisation and management research helps a business in deriving solutions to the different problems arising in the business. If the organisation and management research carried out for solving problems is imaginative, the solutions to the problems will be imaginative, thereby increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the overall business. In this context, Roseet al. (2014) stated that if organisation and management research is imaginative in nature, a business and its operations could be managed with a design. Being imaginative helps a business in designing principles that would be essential for gaining a new workplace experience through organisation and management research.
According to Gruberet al. (2015), imaginativeness in organisation and management research helps managers in leading by design and provides better opportunities for management researchers to go deep into the research and derive innovative solutions for business problems. Gruber et al. (2015) further added that being imaginative helps a business in designing employee experiences and not just the tools and workflows. Being imaginative in organisation and management research also assists in identifying actual and compelling needs along with focusing on business values in an enhanced manner.
Therefore, as per the discussions made on organisation and management research and the type of research in which it can be categorised, I agree to the statement, “Organization and management research is more applied than pure." I also agree with the statement, “Organization and management researchneeds to be made more imaginative and interesting”. The compare and contrast of the two basic types of research, pure research and applied research shows how these two types of research are different from one another. The arguments of the different debates about organisation and management researchcurrently taking place highlight why and how organisation and management research is more applied than being pure. The arguments also help to realise the need for organisation and management research to be imaginative and exciting.
