Introduction

Organizational and environmental analysis for any organization reveals valuable information about the structure, culture and function of the organization alongside identifying issues and factors influencing the organization either positively or negatively. This knowledge is used to build appropriate strategies that can bring organizational growth. In the present report, a case of Kings College London, which is an educational institution and one of the oldest university colleges in England, has been analyzed in light of understanding the organizational background, the external and internal environment of the organization and the management styles and strategies implemented for managing the organization.

In horizontal differential the chain of command is sideways while for vertical differentiation the chain of command is through downward communication. KCL was founded by King George IV and the Duke of Wellington in 1829 through the royal charter. The organizational structure of KCL depicts a functional structure in which the managing director is imparting a top down control over all the administrative departments. The administrative departments in turn support the functions of the academic staff of this institution (Kcl.ac.uk, 2018).

Size: Established in 1829, the organization is functioning in the royal city of London and historically a large college. The motto of this institution is “Sancte et Sapienter”. The latin moto is translated as "With Holiness and Wisdom" in English and is governed by public administration as it a public research university. The current endowment of this institution is £213.5 million (2017) and total budget is worth of £778.2 million (2017). The council is chaired by Sir Christopher Geidt while the Revd Richard Burridge and Ed Byrne act as the dean and the principal of this institution respectively. The total number of academic staff of this institution is 4520 and the number of administrative staff is 2740. The total number of students is 28,900 clearly making this college one of the largest educational institutions in Britain (Kcl.ac.uk, 2018). 

Function: Being an educational institute the organization functions involve teaching diploma and degree courses to undergraduate and postgraduate students and support research work. There are nine different academic departments sub-divided into schools teaching arts, commerce life sciences, medical sciences, mathematics, law, fencing, economy and social sciences. In 2017, King's Business School has been newly added to teach business studies to undergraduate and post-graduate students. Its huge functions in educational sector makes this institute one of the premier publicly governed educational foundations in the Britain (Kcl.ac.uk, 2018).

Culture: The organizational environment is disciplined that supports its long history. The institution holds huge library and art gallery spread across its campuses showing its deep association with art and their perseverance with knowledge. Latin is used to develop its motto (Kcl.ac.uk, 2018).
