Reflective Practice Assessment

1. Diagnosis and Reflection

The assessment provides a reflection on an opportunity to connect reflective practice by using the diagnostic tools and a common response on personal capability. The essay is a self-reflection of my communication skills that are based on the information generated from five diagnostic tools (Bachmann et al. 2013). I have used five diagnostic tools related to communication, which are Johari Window, Myers-Brigs Type Indicator, Communications Style Questionnaire, Assertiveness Questionnaires and SWOT Analysis. While the two communication issues that I have faced is lack of focus and the inconsistent body language. Rather, in this assessment, I have also focused hugely on the recent professional interactions made in the last 12 months. Through the reflection, I have also gained good knowledge about certain activities where I can apply myself to tackle the communication issues.

The first diagnostic tool is the Johari Window that helps people to value better in terms of relations. In this case, I have principally used this tool in the self-help groups and in corporate settings having a heuristic exercise. I have also worked with the subjects and defined a list of adjectives to describe my own personality. Besides, the adjectives are listed in a grid and most importantly, it has around four rooms where room 1 is the area where one sees and others do not see (Baile & Blatner, 2014). Room 2 is where others see but one might not be aware of the situation. Room 3 is the personal space that hides from others whereas Room 4 is a strange area that works instinctively with the involuntary part. I have intended that the arena and open part consist of several adjectives of selected participants with subjects and traits. In order, the hidden and the facade area also works with subject matter that contains the peers mainly. In such case, information assessed on peers might be oblivious because the subject unveils most of the time (Bolkan, Griffin and Goodboy, 2014). Accordingly, the blind area symbolizes information where the subjects might not be aware but could be decided to notify blind spots mostly. Lastly, the unknown area is defined by the participants in terms of motives that are recognized during effective participation.

The next tool is the communication style questionnaire that has interactions everyday with colleagues, family, and friends. The particulars defined in this situation are analyzed as assertive, submissive, manipulative, passive aggressive and aggressive. I have intended assertive style with high esteem that has sweet spot on being passive and aggressive. In case of aggressive style, I mainly followed a content of messages where people are busy in reacting to what is delivered. In case, the Passive-Aggressive Style appears out of anger or through the indirect scenes whereas the submissive style is just about please others and avoiding any type of conflict (Rose & Paisley, 2012). The last is the manipulative style that is calculating and astute. In this instance, I have used Yes/No questions forms to define these particulars:

Particulars

Y/N

I would like to move my hands on communicating

Y

During discrepancy, I will like try to threaten others

N

During talking, I can simply switch tasks in between

Y

I might like to observe things that has various options

N

I would have a better understanding to resolve the issues

The next is the assertiveness questionnaires, which is been defined earlier but this has a situation that deals with varying behaviours. Unlike, this also takes high awareness level as well. I have also considered the outcome it might have in order to recognize varying approach and a predictive situation (Ramírez, 2013). This also has “win-win” situation to define the behavioural patterns.

Particulars

Rather False

I often say, when I want to say no

  •

I protect my rights without breaking other

  •

I blame myself sometimes

  •

It is tough for me to pay attention to others verdict

The last tool is SWOT analysis that would be assessed on Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. I have used this tool because this is effective to understand strengths and weakness and recognizes opportunities and threats as well.

Strengths

I am a quick decision-maker

I am a active listener

Weaknesses

I have my Details with poor orientation

Difficultly in verbalization of my thoughts

Opportunities

Taking quick choice makes my position effective with competitors

Threats

On being oriented, it takes lot of time

Creating a situation for intimidating my position

On reflecting to the diagnostic tools intended, I have defined my current situation in terms of few instances. The first one is the verbal communication where individuals work with the business need and ensures stress, enunciation and tone of voice (Perry, Maffulli, Willson & Morrissey, 2011). I also have defined active listening that helps to understands and respond to what I am confirming or trying to understand with parties’ involvement. Accordingly, I have intended about my perception that has sensory information on identifying the environment. This mainly involves the signals that are effective in the communication area (Harrington, Palmgreen & Donohew, 2014). Besides, I have also developed assertiveness in me that engages me in effective training and communication skills. Lastly, I have also developed emotional intelligence where I have tried to comprehend and manage one’s feeling by setting up good connection of emotions and thoughts.

I have also identified two communication issues that require development is the lack of focus where I could easily communicate with the multi-tasking are. In case, if I would be planning what I was going to say, I would work on thinking about someone else or checking messages. Besides, another communication issue identified is the inconsistent body language that may reinforce me on what I was going to say or contradict a certain matter (Grant & Kinman, 2012). Accordingly, I also have identified few personal interactions on my development plan. I personally feel to work with the articulation of thoughts that must be precise and clear. The Articulation of thoughts had made me to make a presentation where I had prepared slides and defined knowledge about myself very well. This also justified and ensured me that if I was moving on a right track or not (Gordon, Darbyshire & Baker, 2012). On the other hand, developing empathy and emotional intelligence has also provided me a diverse viewpoint to see the matter in a differing perspective. In my experience, I saw one of my friends had personal issues and was not able to express things with a good taskforce.

2. Literature review

From diagnosis and reflection, the two major issues that are been identified is Calling it as it is” and “Sensitive obesity”. The issue confronted as Calling it as it is” may fail sometimes but remains degrading and offensive on certain grounds. In my perspective, this is not a certain challenge that would understand the medical implication on the humiliating aspects of public (Epner & Baile, 2014). Unlike, this also has an argumentative approach with the patient to affect one’s feelings, morale and confidence. The other is the “Sensitive obesity”, where care providers support an active approach with the management. Like most physiotherapists, this encounter with the challenges of work and in major discussions that are defined with training.

As described above about Articulation of thoughts and Developing empathy and emotional intelligence, it is evident to analyze the required communication skill indifferently (Czarniawska & Mazza, 2013). In most cases, the Articulation of thoughts is the structure of words that forms a correct statement. I have always tried to articulate the speech in conversation form that expresses spoken words clearly and precisely rather in a beneficial manner. I have also tried to work with a priority plan that makes statements spontaneous. With a clear vision, my articulated learning speech delivers talent with a good vision on proper understanding in the learning area (Chmielecki, 2015). However, I also developed an understanding that has good priority to be involved in a situation that is oppressive. For this, I have availed myself not to get involved in much detail regarding lack of priority planning.

However to develop the articulation of thoughts, I have tried to use few areas that has good capability to work on the matter. First is to acknowledge the problem where one may easily recognize the problem and make a powerful statement clearly. Secondly, the thought process would work with good gesture and well-maintained posture to justify on effectiveness of thoughts. Rather, this helps audience to drive attention from them usually (Butler, 2014). Unlike, variation in speech needs focus on the statement in order to keep audience motivated whereas Intensity of voice is very much proficient to speak with high intensity such that person standing on a huge crowd can easily hear from that (Bridges et al. 2011). The other few is self-confidence where the speaker speaks very much fluently so that audience can attract more while vocabulary helps the speaker to understand on certain terms that are very much familiar to the audience.

In case of developing empathy and emotional intelligence, I have tried to understand the differing behaviours and attitudes of people. This tries to show the capability of people to distinguish on the emotions where situation demands the most (Bolkan, Griffin and Goodboy, 2014). Unlike, the emotional area also creates interpersonal relation so that one can easily manage and tackle those critical issues to any high level that is hard. Through inspection, I can also identify how easily I can connect with people’s emotions by developing a means of differentiation at higher standards.

For defining empathy and emotional intelligence, it is demonstrated variably on the models described as ability model where there is good perception and emotions as well. This mainly facilitates with perceived emotions so that no such appropriate levels could be entertained (Gordon, Darbyshire & Baker, 2012). Unlike, it is effective that the emotions and feelings of management require a healthy structure. This could also work for long-term growth on emotional grounds.

(Source: Perry, Maffulli, Willson & Morrissey, 2011)

The next is the mixed model that is been defined with skills and competencies on emotional intelligence area. As opined by Grant & Kinman (2012), the major constraints are self-regulation that implies on the capability to control impulsive actions of others while this may also work flexibly in certain changing situations. Besides, the self-awareness has good potential to recognize emotions that have a sense of a gut feeling. However, the social skill has good ability to influence others and tries to maintain a relation with the social network whereas empathy analyzes the ability to understand the emotions acting with the social environment. According to Czarniawska & Mazza, (2013), Trait model is another one that helps to analyze emotions through self-perception. This has certain hierarchies with lower personality levels. In order, the relevance associated to it works with a productive response when reviewed with extensive research. Moreover, on using a constant attribute, it presents a causal relation that is made with the ever-changing events effectively.

Figure 3: Trait model

(Source: Rose & Paisley, 2012)

However, from the literature review, it can be assessed about the interpersonal factors that affect the conflict area of the identified issues (Chmielecki, 2015). It is important that the difference conceptualizes with the research been conducted with a particular group working with the organizational setting. Besides, the background area of the participants must seek a good position such that effective communication style is been followed on having a good influence in overall (Pfeuffer, 2015). Accordingly, it is viable that the communication style identified works with the perceived area for the manager’s cult. In situations that are oppressive, I have developed articulated thoughts and emotional intelligence so that planning with priority can effectively work well in much more detail. This also helps to connect with people’s emotional situations with good inspection.

3. Action Plan

After identifying the two issues in communication area that needed good development, I created an action plan for a period of around 6 months to overcome these problems. It is very important for me to work efficiently and track on the areas where I feel accomplished to reflect on my own performance. At the end of 6-month period, working on the communication skill would be a productive material to identify the issues and work accordingly with future planning (Skilton, 2011). Besides, I have come as a mentor to oversee the processes and use mentor’s proficiency to work in future planning. On devising a plan, I also have come up with evaluation results on the thought process of interpersonal skills to improve articulation of thoughts and analyze areas to develop emotional intelligence as well.

From all these areas, I could make a brief insight to the 5 diagnostic tools that I have used for gathering information on the communication issues. Besides, the two issues I have identified is the Calling it as it is” and “Sensitive obesity”. However, with instances made to critical apprehension, I have tried to focus on the literature and plan the results on emotional intelligence and empathy, and articulation of thoughts.
