Introduction:

The report aims to review classical management theories and leadership styles concerning the modern hospitality industry of the UK. The organization which has been chosen for the discussion is the London Landmark hotel, which is a popular hospitality organization based in Marylebone, London. The organization has around 200 employees and has won numerous awards for its high-quality products and services that they offer to their clients and guests. In this report, we will be analyzing different management theories, leadership styles, and talent management theories that are currently being practiced or have the potential of being used by the organizational executives in the future. The purpose of doing so is to find the best management theories and techniques which would work perfectly in the new management structure that the organization has decided to undergo. All of the theories and techniques which will be discussed in the report will be discussed in detail and will be cited for reference. Eventually, everything will be summed up in conclusion.

Classical Management Theories:

The hospitality industry is diverse. It would be fair to say that the hospitality industry is among the most culturally diverse industries in the world because their clients themselves are very diverse. So, we can say that it is among the few industries in which we can observe the direct benefits of having a diverse workforce in the organization in terms of customer service (Rosenberg Hansen & Ferlie, 2016). If we talk about the classical theories of management, then we can say that there are quite a few theories which are given as follows:

Bureaucratic Management Theory

The theory is focused on hierarchically structuring an organization which would help in having clear rules of governance. In the hospitality industry, this theory is significant because it helps in creating a fine set of rules which every employee in the organization has to follow.

Scientific Management Theory

The second classical theory is of the scientific management theory. This theory focuses on increasing staff productivity by breaking down complex tasks into smaller steps. This theory also focuses on talent management because it emphasizes that specific tasks be given to workers having expertise in them (Lauer, 2019). This would ensure productivity in the organization.

Principles of Administrative Management

This Management theory focuses on the principles of administrative management, which are forecasting, planning, organizing, commanding, coordinating, and controlling. These principles are applicable in complex hospitality industry tasks like promotion.

Human relations movement theory

The theory is about the fact that employees work more efficiently when they are being supervised and when they feel a sense of affiliation with their work and their workgroups.

Theory X and Theory Y

The last classical theory is the theory x and theory y, which are the perceptions of managers about their subordinates. Concept X supervisors assume that their workers dislike work, and also they are apathetic. As a matter of fact, concept y supervisors are the ones that believe that their juniors love their work, and they are self-motivated.

Role of Leader and Different Leadership Styles in Talent Management:

In general, we can say that the role of a leader is to guide, lead, help, and motivate people working in an organization towards achieving their organizational goals. In the hospitality industry, however, we can say that the role of the leader is to ensure that all the organization related operations are being run smoothly, and the organization is running efficiently and effectively (Tuczek, et al., 2018). Similarly, the leadership style which can be observed in the organization which is related to the talent management of the landmark hotel London is given as follows:

Democratic leadership

This Leadership style is the one in which the members of a group or the employees working in the organization also help in the decision-making process of the organization. This leadership style is commonly seen in an organization which has a supportive culture towards their subordinates. This leadership style has a huge influence on talent management because it encourages cooperation and participation of other group members in decision making. Having increased cooperation in a culturally diverse organization would ensure that the organization will be hiring the most talented individuals, regardless of their cultural background.

Transformational leadership

The next leadership style is the transformational leadership style. This style of leadership is the leadership style in which the leader works with the teams to help them in identifying the need for change, and it also helps them in creating a vision to guide them through inspiration and motivating them. Transformational leadership is yet another leadership style that promotes talent management on a great deal (Yahaya & Ebrahim, 2016). Transformational leadership will ensure that the culturally diverse employees will have the support from the higher authorities and when this will be combined with the talent management of the organization, than it will have positive outcomes on the organizational productivity.

Transactional leadership

The next leadership style is transactional leadership, which is focused on promoting employee compliance by offering those rewards or punishment as a result of their actions. This type of leadership is mostly seen in first-line management in an organization, but this type of motivation is only good for motivating in the short run.

Management and the leadership Styles of The Landmark Hotel London:

In the landmark hotel London, certain leadership and management styles are being practiced. If we talk about the management styles at the landmark hotel London, then we can say that there is a mainly democratic and autocratic type of leadership style of management being practiced openly in the organization (Fiaz, et al., 2017). As previously mentioned, the democratic leadership style is the style in which the subordinates or the staff are given equal opportunity to participate in the decision-making process.

Similarly, the autocratic leadership style in which one individual takes the decision, and there is little input from the subordinates. The management style in the landmark hotel London varied from person to person and scenario to scenario. It was observed that the higher ranks, such as the line managers or the middle managers, were the ones with the democratic leadership style. In contrast, the first-line managers were the ones with the autocratic leadership styles.

Analysis and Evaluation of management and Leadership Styles

The landmark hotel London is a small hospitality organization that has around 200 employees currently working in the organization. The hotel is offering all of the main services currently being offered in the good hospitality industry, so it is understandable to use different kinds of management and leadership styles in the hotel. The leadership styles differ from department to department, and this custom made leadership and management plan is the thing that is contributing to the success of the organization (Ricard, et al., 2017).

If we talk about the management theories in the organization, then we can say that the management theories such as the systems theory, principles of administrative management, beaureautic management, scientific management, and the human relations theory are essential for the type of hospitality industry that we are working in. The organization is a diverse workplace of people from different backgrounds, so increasing productivity by assigning tasks to specialists and making complex tasks easier by breaking them down into smaller steps is of immense importance.

Similarly, if we talk about the leadership theories in the landmark hotel London than we can say that they are also productive in their respective domains; the landmark hotel may have a significant place in the local hospitality industry. However, it is still small as compared to other hospitality organizations of a similar sort (Gandolfi & Stone, 2017). So having three different leadership styles, such as transformational, transactional, and bureaucratic leadership, can be fruitful in continuing to run the organization even after the structural change successfully.

LO2: EXPLORE THE FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE DIFFERENT MANAGEMENT STYLES AND STRUCTURES IN A SERVICE INDUSTRY CONTEXT

Investigation and Analysis of Internal and External Factors

Internal factors

There are many interior variables of the organization which affects the monitoring design as well as framework in the Spots Resort London. A few of the important inner elements influencing the organization are offered as complies with:

Human resources

One of the things that are positively contributing to the success of the landmark hotel is its diverse human resource. The landmark hotel has the best talent management team, which ensures to hire the best-talented individual regardless of their race, religion, and gender. This makes their diversity as their strength because the customers that we serve are also quite diverse. This leaves a positive impact on the existing management style and structures in the organization.

Financial resources

Financial resources are yet another thing which is positively influencing the management styles and structures in the organization. Having good financial resources allows the transactional leadership style to offer rewards to the employees to keep them motivated (Choi, et al., 2017). Financial resources also help in finding the best talent for the organization.

External Factors

Just like the interior factors, there are many exterior elements that influence monitoring designs and frameworks in the spots hotel. They are as complies with:

Social

Social factors are the ones that affect the hospitality industry the most. This social factor is among the ones which influence the sustainability of any hospitality industry the most. The income and education of the people staying in the hotels are among the few factors which are contributing the most in the success of the hospitality industry. This factor affects our organizational structure to a huge extent.

Technological environment

The technological environment is yet another factor that is contributing to the organizational structure and the management styles affecting the organization. The technological environment of London makes it among the busiest travel destinations in the world. This influences the controlled hierarchical structure of the landmark hotel in London.

Critical Analysis of Influence of Management Styles on Internal and External Factors

The landmark hotel London has a very diverse workforce and a very tight hierarchical structure. The diverse workforce and the external factors such as social and technological factors are the ones that affect the management style the most. The management styles that are being used in the landmark hotel are autocratic and democratic leadership styles, which are being used at different levels in the organization (Gandolfi & Stone, 2018). If we talk about the democratic style of management, then we can say that having a diverse workforce contributes the most in making this management style successful. Having a style of democracy while having a diverse workforce allows multiple solutions to a problem, which helps in solving the problems more efficiently. Similarly, having an autocratic leadership style allows better control over the organization and is better when there is quick decision making required in certain scenarios.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we can say that the management styles in an organization should be based on the need of the organization rather than blindly believing what is right and wrong. Using different management styles at different organizational levels can also be productive and even preferred as different scenarios are needed to be handled differently. Similarly, based on the organizational culture and leadership styles and the management styles being used in the organization, it would be appropriate to keep using the leadership and management styles despite the structural changes in the organization (Gandolfi & Stone, 2017). The organization should be flexible enough to incorporate new management and leadership methods whenever and wherever necessary.

Assignment 2

LO3: ASSESS CURRENT AND FUTURE MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS FOR THE SERVICE SECTOR

Introduction

This report will be focused on assessing the existing and also future monitoring and also management skills for the solution sector as well as to show administration as well as management skills in a service industry context. The organization which has been chosen for the discussion is the London landmark hotel, which is a popular hospitality organization based in Marylebone, London. The organization has around 200 employees and has won numerous awards for its high-quality products and services that they offer to their clients and guests. The hospitality organization is undergoing structural management changes to increase productivity and for sustainable growth.

For this, there will be various management and also leadership abilities that will be examined and reviewed in the context of the hospitality and service sector. All of the management and leadership abilities that will certainly be discussed in the report will be discussed thoroughly as well as will be pointed out for referral. Eventually, every little thing will be summarized to conclude.

Assessment of current management and leadership skills

Management can be described as the process of dealing with or controlling things or people in an organization. Similarly, leadership can be described as the process of leading, guiding, and motivating a group of people to achieve their organizational objectives. Currently in doing so, a manager or leader should have specific administration and also leadership abilities, which make the management or monitoring procedure a great deal easier (Golubovskaya, et al., 2019). These leadership and management skills can be categorized into 2 components, which are the hard and also soft skills of management. The present soft skills of management and management are provided as complies with:

Communication

Communication is a soft skill that is required in almost all kinds of management and leadership jobs. But in the hospitality industry, like the Landmark hotel London, these skills are particularly important. This is because few organizations deal with their customers as directly as the hospitality industry. A big part of running a successful hospitality business is to be able to communicate professionally and clearly to senior management. Although the current communication methods in the hotel are effective, one should always look for better ways to communicate in an organization.

Delegation

The next important and current skills of leadership and management being practiced is of delegation. The hospitality industry is fast-paced, and it is not possible to do everything by yourself most of the time. So it is really important that you have the delegating skills as a successful delegation of tasks is often regarded as an important skill of a good manager or leader (Kandampully, et al., 2018). Failing to delegate can result in mismanagement, which would eventually result in the decreased productivity of the organization.

Critical Thinking

Here at the landmark hotel London, critical thinking is given the utmost importance because one cannot simply expect the type of problems that they will be facing in the organization. So the management is always on the lookout to evaluate situations, recognize potential issues, and suggest solutions to the problems.

Hard skills

Now if we talk about the existing hard skills in the Landmark hotel than we can say that they are given as follows:

Marketing

The landmark hotel has effective marketing techniques that give the hotel a significant name in the hospitality industry. They invest a huge portion of their income in digital marketing and promotion, and this has served them well in attracting customers.

Project Management

The landmark hotel also has good project management skills. The hotel offers the services of wedding and business meetings as well, and their good project management skills can be regarded as their strength if we do an internal analysis (Pham, et al., 2019).

Computer Technology

The landmark hotel uses the latest computer technology, which helps them in keeping up with the modern technological trends in hospitality management. This helps them in speeding up their business operations, which in turn increases their customer satisfaction.

Evaluation of Current and Future Management and Leadership Skills

Although the landmark hotel is succeeding in their service operations with its current monitoring as well as management skills, there is always area for improvement. Mentioning renovation, we can say that there are many administration and also leadership skills that can take the company to be even much better in executing its procedures. Analysis of the present management and also management skills are offered as adheres to:

Communication

Communication can be regarded as one of the best current management skills, which are leading to organizational productivity. Here at Landmark hotel London, communication is of utmost importance. Because of the low power distance, the top management can quickly react to any issues faced by either the staff or even the customers (Purba & Tan, 2016). This is contributing a lot to their success.

Delegation

Delegation is yet another skill that is keeping the organization going and the customers happy. Having a diverse work environment, it is really important to find the right person for the right job. So delegation can be regarded as the strength of the organization.

Future Management and leadership skill:

Motivating

The first future management and leadership skills that the management of the landmark hotel needs is the ability to motivate their employees. Now, it does not in any way mean that the existing skills are not motivating the employees at all. This means that the management needs to continue finding new and improved ways of motivating their employees (Wadhwa & Guthrie, 2018). This could be done by either having a friendly competition in the staff members about the best performance or by rewarding the staff members for the best performance.

Adaptability

The next future skills that the organization must have is the adaptability. This is one of the skills that the organization runs short to some extent because the top management believes in running the operations while adopting the orthodox methods of customer service. This management skill can be achieved by training the management by case studies and changing their thought process through an effective counseling session.

Evaluation of the Management and Leadership Skills Development Concerning Talent Management

Talent management is a prevailing concept in the modern world. We can simply describe talent management as the organization's commitment to an organization to recruit, hire, retain, and develop the most talented individuals that are available in the job market. As the landmark hotel is already a culturally diverse organization and is located in London, which is among the biggest job markets in the world, we can say that it is almost a necessity to have good talent management in the organization (Madera, et al., 2017).

In the modern world, one cannot simply operate without having good talent management skills and the fact that the organization encourages cultural diversity; it is inevitable not to be affected by the organizational culture. Talent management comes with benefits like having a strategic hiring process, improved onboard experience, retaining top talent, employee development, and improved employee experience. All of these benefits improve and affect the existing management and leadership skills in an organization to a huge degree. Talent management encourages data sharing, which means that there is better communication in the organization. Similarly, it helps in retaining top talent, which means that it contributes to keeping the employees motivated and upbeat in the organization.

LO4: DEMONSTRATE MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS IN A SERVICE INDUSTRY CONTEXT

Compare and Contrast the Change Management and Leadership

Change management can be described as the approaches to prepare, assistance, as well as assist people, teams, and companies in making organizational modification. The landmark hotel is based in London, which is the business hub of the UK. So it is obvious that there would be a lot of competitors that the company deals with in the hospitality industry. So for the comparison, we will be reviewing "hotel the Savoy" in London, which is a famous 5-star resort as well as is amongst the most significant competitors of the firm (Gehrels & Suleri, 2016). Currently, if we look at the change monitoring of Hotel the Savoy, we can see that their adjustment administration is a great deal much better and proactive as contrasted to the Spots Hotel London.

Hotel the Savoy follows the principles of change management like start at the top, involve every layer, make the formal cause, and create ownership. In contrast, the landmark hotel follows the orthodox style of customer service and falls a little short when it comes to the reception of change in an organization. So, to have a competitive edge in the market, the organization must be able to quickly adapt the changes with the pace of the modern world. To do so, the best thing to do would be to follow a step by step procedure. The steps would consist of things like identifying the needed change, creating and roadmap, gather data for evaluation, communicating the change to all the levels of the organization, and finally monitor the effects and makes any modification if necessary.

How Change Management Affects Management and Leadership Styles

As mentioned previously, modification management can be described as the methods to prepare, assistance, and aid people, groups, as well as companies in making organizational modification. This principle of change administration is dominating nowadays due to the range of benefits that It provides. Yet one point that alter management is assessed for is because of their advantages in the friendliness sector The friendliness sector is a fast-paced industry that is exposed to change, similar to any other company in the market. (Sharma, 2019).

So, if talking about change management in the Landmark hotel London, we can say that it affects management and leadership skills to a huge degree, especially because the organization has a diverse workforce. Upon doing the analysis, we can see that the Landmark hotel's change management is acting as a strength to the organization and is affecting the management and leadership skills being positively used in the organization. The first effect that change management is having in the Landmark hotel is of increasing communication because change management encourages data sharing and interpersonal communication for better operational productivity in the organization (Surucu & Sesen, 2019). Another positive effect of change management that the organization is experiencing is of better decision making and good recruitment decision in the landmark hotel.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we can say that the Landmark hotel is mostly performing well in terms of adopting and using the best leadership and management skills that one can adopt. But there are a few things that the company should keep in mind, and those are to improve the methods of motivating the employees and increase the adaptability of the new and modern technological and social trends in the organization (Radjenovic, 2018). This could be done by following a proper and step by step procedure and creating a roadmap of adapting the changes that the organization can take the opportunity to grow their business. This would not only create a competitive edge for them in the market but would also increase their chances of sustainable growth in the organization.
