Australian most playable Sport: Soccer and Basketball | Sports Management
Australians are known for their sporting attitude. In every International level on sports events, Aussies have proved them. Being an Aussie I know the feelings of sports activity. I get chance to serve the country’s Sports Department at the state level and due to this reason some another scenario is unleashed on me recently. It is said to make a report on two sports of Australia and I took this research work as an honor. There are so many sports like cricket, baseball, badminton but I choose Soccer and Basketball. Soccer is nothing but football but here in Australia, this team sport is named as Soccer (Wattie et al. 2014). The maximum population of the Australia cheers for this game. Basketball is also very warm acceptance among the Australian people. These two sports have a bright future aspect and make the nation proud one day.
Australia’s most played and one of the most favorite outdoor sport is Soccer. Here, for Soccer the national government body known as Football Federation Australia (FFA). This sports council organizes tournament like, A-League, W-League, and FFA Cup. Both men and women played Soccer. Moreover, they participate in all the national tournaments organized by Football Federation Australia (Veale, Pearce & Carlson, 2010). The football organization incorporates total nine states and province member federations so that they can supervise the game within their suitable area. The teams of men’s and women are known as Socceroos and Matildas respectively. The history of this sport is quite interesting and it was first publically appeared in late 1875. In Australia, the modern or improvised soccer was presented in the late 19th century by British incomer. The very first club for soccer was established in Sydney on August 3rd, 1880, named Wanderers (Vella ........

In Australia, the modern or improvised soccer was presented in the late 19th century by British incomer. The very first club for soccer was established in Sydney on August 3rd, 1880, named Wanderers (Vella et al. 2016). Presently, the oldest club that has existed is Balgownie Rangers. It was founded in 1883 in Wollongong. In 2006, before going to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Australia was just an organizing member of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC).
This particular sport has many cost-effective values that can highly affect the players. This sports activity is completely teamwork (Scanlan et al. 2014). Here, the joint effort is the keyword for success. Personal skill or personal ego is secondary. If in the field, one or two players can perform well but he or they are unwilling to share the game with other team members then it will be the most harmful scenario for the team. That one or two particular person is the Frankenstein for the whole team. According to Veal, Toohey & Frawley (2012), it is a spontaneous reflex of a team where the 11 players act as one. Unity cost is the key to success. One most important cost parameter is time. There is a certain time of 90 minutes with a break of 15 minutes. Naturally, all the players have to maintain the time boundary. Soccer is the great teacher on the matter of time management and no one can deny this fact.
At the young age, many people played soccer but very few of them took this sport seriously. Here, is an active pathway for those who really wish to be a professional player. Soccer federation FFA gives true opportunity for those talented and promising players who have true craving for this sports activity (McKay et al. 2014). There is also option to get scholarships on soccer in Australia or worldwide and is opportunity for the deserving.
Money is really one big issue for everyone. Now many people showed their interest in this sport but most of them afraid to take it as a career option (Rowsell, Coutts, Reaburn & Hill-Haas, 2011). If anybody has true devotion and passion for this sport then it can give hundred times more than that to them. Please do not afraid to take this game as fulltime job.
Sport is the most effective exercise than anything. If someone played soccer regularly then no doctor or physician is needed (Markwick et al. 2015). Soccer helps to circulate blood throughout the body and muscles. It also helps to keep heart healthy and act as mind freshener. Soccer makes a player mind sporty and it badly needs to accommodate present lifestyle. Moreover, this game has great benefits for health.
There is another sport what also has a great impact on every Aussie’s i.e., Basketball. Basketball is not a new trend on the sports field. Now Australia is known as the place of excellence for basketball. Here, all kids loved to play this game and almost every school has their own basketball team (Li, Sotiriadou & Auld, 2015). The history says that the very fast basketball organization was established in the year 1939 and then it was known as Australian Basketball Federation. Then in 1949, the Basketball Australia became a member of FIBA and in 1982, it merges with it. Basketball Australia is a not a profitable organization. The fund mainly comes from the government grants, sponsorship, member’s donation, and fundraising (Lim et al. 2011). Here, the basketball authority who control and govern this sport named as Basketball Australia. This sports council takes all necessary steps for future evolution and assistance at all positions (Hayhurst, Giles & Wright, 2015). There is two most honored, professional tournament is played, and that has approved by Basketball Australia. Those tournaments are the National Basketball League (NBL) and the Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) respectively. There also exists a semi-professional tournament and once it was the wedge of the Australian Basketball Association (ABA). Presently, Basketball Australia works with FIFA and Olympic competition as it is fielding elective teams.
Basketball is normally very popular among kids and adults. This sport has so many cost effectiveness such as time, money, opportunity etc. First, comes the time cost. Time is very important parameter in everybody’s life. Time is like air nobody can confine this cost at his/her own (Hajkowicz, Cook, Wilhelmseder & Boughen, 2013). Basketball teaches how to manage time or more precisely how to utilize time properly. The NBA game has 4 quarter with 12 minutes for each. Hence, the team has total 48 minutes. Players should utilize these 48 minutes accordingly to win the match.
As it is a team game then the joint effort of participants will be counted. Solo skill is not that important. The ultimate goal of every player is to win the match well. Coordination is one of the things that needed to play the sport. It is stated by Guagliano et al. (2014) that basketball can learn teamwork and coordination with the kids in the best way. Both men and women played basketball here the equality is also maintained.
The value of money cannot be denied. Money is an important factor in every field so it is not an exception. However, here the parameter money is combined with the cost opportunity. A successful basketball player can only know how and what it plays exactly. This sport also offers various kinds of career opportunities (Cobley, Hanratty, O'Connor & Cotton, 2014). Most promising school or high school level players can apply for basketball scholarships. Besides, professional players, there is a lot more exposure in this field. One can be a coach at school or university level (Eime et al. 2013). If one has professional experience in this field then NBA coaching is awaiting. There are n-numbers of clubs in Australia and worldwide so there is whole world of opportunity ahead.
Most Aussies loved to play basketball as it gives them the opportunity for socializing with family and friends as well as it provides a good amount of physical exercise. This sports activity is a complete package of health benefits (Chiba, 2013). It is said that health is wealth. If someone played this game just for enjoyment then also it helps to keep fit that person.
Soccer is most playable outdoor sport in Australia. Here, the domestic soccer league runs throughout the year. Only during the summer season, the professional's tournaments are held during the winter season the amateur or semi-professionals tournaments take place (Camiré & Trudel, 2010). The craziness and passion among Aussie’s can barely imaginable about this sport. Soccer is a unisex game here and it is one of the vital reasons for this popularity. There are many opportunities awaited for soccer players. If anybody loves soccer and think to continue with it then that are fine decisions (Brophy et al. 2010). Professional soccer players know its worth. Sports personals are not only the player they are the representative of the country. The capable one can apply to the national team and the selection chance will surely be high for that person. There are so many clubs for training here in Australia (Abbott & Barber, 2015). Opportunity to become volunteer or national level coaches is always there. Apart from this soccer or football has big ground to anywhere in this world. These reasons play as catalyst and growth of flourish boundlessly. Many countries give scholarships to the soccer player and this factor also help to increase the growth opportunity for a sportsman.
Basketball has the big field of opportunity throughout the world. In not only Australia but so many developing countries, also cherish this game (Wattie et al. 2014). On March 2014, Basketball Australia stated the second highest team participation sport in Australia is the sports basketball. Because of this, the popularity and demand of this game increased rapidly. NBL is quite popular among Australians and it has support from outside too (Vella et al. 2016). The women NBL also gained popularity and now it has craze among people. In 2015, the number of people played NBL creates record among all sports. According to (author) gradually this sport becomes the newest industry. Like other industry, basketball has noticeable growth in every manner. The reason behind of its growth is: a) open career options b) available infrastructure c) health benefits d) communicating and socializing skill. So many academic institutions have separate infrastructure for this sport (Veale, Pearce & Carlson, 2010). Students get attracted by this sport easily and the growth of interest spread. There is a report that says the scenario of Global Basketball changed radically and it proved in some way 2017. There is certain forecast about basketball growth rate, market share, and basketball production level from 2012 to 2022.
In Australia, Football is commonly known as soccer. In 2006, total 970.728 people participated in an event of this with registered players 435,728 and unregistered players 535,000 and this number is according to FIFA’s Big Count. There was an audit held by Gemba in 2013, that report showed that as a player 1.96 million Australians were actively involved in the game (Veal, Toohey & Frawley, 2012). While adding the involvement of fans, coaches, and referees with this sport the number is around 3.1 million. Soccer has an immense supporter who loved to play and watch this game. Here is the participation rate is given to understand things more clearly.
Figure 1: Participating percentage according to age
(Source: Spaaij, 2013)
In 2013, Sherry & Strybosch (2012) showed compared to other sports that maximum young kids start playing soccer at an early age. Here, the figure shows that at the 6+ aged children play soccer most and it is nearly 21%. The 12+ aged kids played soccer of 14% and 17+ adults of about 9%. Nevertheless, the bad thing is that this participation level decreases with growing age. For future growth, this kind of participation graph is not desirable (Scanlan, Dascombe, Reaburn & Dalbo, 2012). This is alarming to all people who loved this sport. However, this is the high time for the sports authority also as they only can take necessary steps to improve this trend of participation.
Figure 2: Team Sports Participation
(Source: Scanlan et al. 2014)
From the figure, one can easily assume the participation rate of each sport. Basketball is quite popular among Australians but the participation trends are poor and the above graph is the clear evidence of it (Rowsell, Coutts, Reaburn & Hill-Haas, 2011). These participation rates of aged 14+ are given here. For the adult, this rate is poor. Anyone can understand that there really need rapid action to improve this rate. The graph shows that this sport holds the 3rd position, which is not bad, but it can be number 1 sport in Australia (McKay et al. 2014). As there are truly capable and promising players, they just waiting for appropriate chances. This is the time to find them and they will surely reach the desired achievement.
Figure 3: Participation ratio comparison
(Source: Markwick et al. 2015)
The above graph shows a comparative study of soccer and basketball. This survey was held between the age group of 18-34 (Lim et al. 2011). The participation rate decreased for the Basketball significantly. This is not a good sign for future aspect. Whereas the participation trends of soccer increased a little bit. Future participation trends of soccer have growth and it has to keep it for better future.
Soccer is the outdoor game so to play the initial need is a field. There is all type of support for this game in Australia so the future prediction can assume easily (Li, Sotiriadou & Auld, 2015). In 1977, the National Soccer League (NSL) was started and that was first national level football or soccer competition in Australia. In the year 2004, this NSL is dissolved and substituted by the new soccer tournament named A-league. In 2005, the very first season of this newly born league started its journey. There is a lot supporter of this game with a bunch of promising players (Hayhurst, Giles & Wright, 2015). Naturally, a bright future is waiting ahead for this game. This is the highest rated sport in Australia. Football or soccer is outdoor games and during playtime along with players, the supports feel the adrenaline rush and that is the USP of this sport. People loved to feel the thrill so that they will always stay with this game. It is stated that this sport is not bound by limitations, as it is now a profitable sports industry (Hajkowicz, Cook, Wilhelmseder & Boughen, 2013). Here the infrastructure and playing style is not less than an art. To be more precise, this sport has promising future and to achieve that only one criterion is needed and that is love and passion for this game. To hold this golden era of soccer every single people and organization has to work with true dedication. Like, “Rome did not build in a day.”
Prediction about basketball is so obvious for future. It has a large number of supporters, players throughout the country and worldwide. Basketball can be played both indoor and outdoor. This works as stress bluster. Many people played this game just to keep then fresh and stress-free (Guagliano et al. 2014). In Australia, 18,000 high schools have their personal basketball team with 17,000 plus participants. This information provided by National Federation of State High School Associations. The present trends of participation are not that good for basketball whereas Australia confronts a golden era in mid 1980 to mid-1990. During this period the NBL (National Basketball League) Australia lived tranquil days (Eime et al. 2013). However, this success lost its charm gradually for so many factors. During the 2000s, this game lost its previous media attention, corporate support, public support, and popularity. Despite all this fact basketball was chosen as the most popular sport in the province of Victoria according to the Recreation and Sports survey by the Australian Sports Commission's Exercise in 2010.
It is shown that many young children drop out team soccer and basketball because of the “former bad experience.” This kind of things is not good things for the future scenario. Here the question arises, what is this “former or very fast bad experience?” This is nothing but some silly but obvious things to resolve in near future (Cobley, Hanratty, O'Connor & Cotton, 2014). In school, the maximum time the young group of players is trained by untrained or first-time coaches. Many institutions do not have full-time coaches as well. This fact will prove fatal for young and trainee players. For future growth of these two sports, it is recommended that to check this matter thoroughly.
There are many children who are parents are volunteer coaches (Chiba, 2013). Naturally, they trained their own children especially and most of the time it proved that these kids are like “upcoming superstar” to their eyes. Likewise, these coaches are unable to give equal treatment to all trainee kids. Some volunteer coaches move with their children to big house soccer or basketball club if they meet any competitive opportunity (Camiré & Trudel, 2010). Consequences have to face but the refreshment or leisure club. This kind of institutions loses the support of their energetic administrator volunteers.
Complexity increases when players grow up. Old and potential coaches want to retire. Appointed new coaches may not friendly with the children or the coach has no previous experiences and feels hesitant to coach children. This field also needs to check properly.
Another recommendation for future concern has improvised the model of coaching. Whether it is soccer or basketball, most of the experienced coaches follow the professional model and that is mainly based on Performance and Power. No doubt, this is the standard model for a professional player. However, for young kids this model acts as unfriendly and destructive manner. Whereas (author) also accept this drawback (Brophy et al. 2010). This kind of model ruins their natural interest to sports like soccer and basketball.
Above stated issues cannot be resolved without a quality funding. For the future betterment of these favorite sports activities, both sports authority have to pay extra attention to the good amount of funding (Abbott & Barber, 2015). Ultimately, this will gain the national pride and international recognition.
These two sports are Australia’s most favorite game. Each of this sport demands a high future of expectations. Sports are the identity of a country. I hope that I am able to touch every necessary point required for this report. I personally like basketball as it has all that material for enjoyment as well as to built sports mentality. If basketball rise as number one sports of Australia then that will be the happiest moment for all Australians. This country has known to the world for swimming, cycling, soccer and many more activity and basketball is one of the integral parts of all. There are always crises exists to demoralize but let not lose the hope and focus on these most beautiful sport of this country. Hence, this makes soccer and basketball as the National sport of Australia.
