Introduction

Whistleblowing has risen exponentially in the United States over the previous two decades. It is no coincidence that whistleblowing has grown in popularity over the past two decades, which has seen significant government and corporate misconduct. Here, we will be discussing the definition given by Gene. G. James about the term whistleblowing and how he considers it justified. Lastly, we will provide our reflection concerning the concept of whistleblowing given by James.

Justification

 Whistleblowing is a controversial concept. In recent times, we have seen whistle-blowers being subjected to harassment by the company under which the individual is employed. As laws and regulations of a company demand obedience, loyalty, and confidentiality from every employee, hence, whistleblowing is not supported in most organizations. Even if some employees are in favor of whistleblowing, they do not support it directly as they believe that their support will make it too popular among the public (Saputra et. al. 2020). Several individuals even consider whistleblowing to be unethical because of the organizational obligations that are made in everyone's recruiting agreement when they assume any employment in any corporation or organization. It is justified that if we are committing to an organization, we would be wrong to report any wrongdoing inside its premises as we are bound by protocols and breaking the contract. However, this is not the situation. Whistleblowing can become incredibly challenging, with different obstacles to achieving any outcome. It can even be harmful, as evidenced by Edward Snowden's 2013 disclosure of the NSA and CIA's global monitoring operations, which included immoral tactics (Saputra et. al. 2020).

According to the definition given by Gene G James "Whistle-blowing may be defined as the attempt of an employee or former employee to disclose what he or she believes to

 be wrongdoing in or by the organization." He believes that whistleblowing is ethically appropriate under certain circumstances, such as not causing damage to anyone else, and that discretion cannot receive priority (James, 2001). He also includes a few parameters to back up his claims. 1) The organization intends to hurt (including user/employee/product/etc.). 2) To complain to the immediate supervisors unless that individual is involved in dishonest practices or wrongdoing. 3) If supervisors are compromised and refrain from acting, the Board of Directors must complete all corporate measures (James, 2001). Whistle-blowers must have substantial proof and confirmation of the violation or unethical actions, and they must feel that the conduct of whistleblowing will result in good outcomes.

There are several degrees of whistleblowing and associated repercussions. It can also result in several adverse consequences, such as loss of employment, tarnishment of reputation in the corporate sector, harassment, and so on. There are several levels of whistleblowing and its impact. It can also have several negative consequences, such as job loss, damage to one's reputation, expulsion from the sector, and threats (Dungan, Young, & Waytz, 2019). Take the Edward Snowden instance once more, as he was exposed to some immoral government programs, his security was jeopardized, and he is still in asylum in Russia to the present day.

I agree with James regarding his concept of Whistleblowing. We have a right, if not a duty, to speak out against illegal and immoral behavior to prevent harm to others. Finding measures to eradicate misconduct should be a mission, and the government should provide whistle-blowers more protection. I agree with his argument since whistleblowing encompasses unethical use of authority and the primary prerequisites include not inflicting harm to others. I believe that large-scale whistleblowing instances with the correct motivations and criteria are significant.

Conclusion

While it has brought numerous benefits, it has also posed new challenges and concerns.
